Assignment:
Timeline of Waste/Surplus
We would like to make a timeline of “waste/surplus” in broadest sense.
Previously we did a timeline of “water” where we asked students to
research water from 15 billion years ago to present. In this assignment we
asked people to think about about “water” from many perspectives; synchronized
swimming, history of “ice”/ “bling” etc. We had very interesting results when
trying not to limit the conceptual net we cast in thinking of “water”.
(see photos below: recycled water bottles filled with research citations hung
in an arc on the wall)
We would love to work with your class to create a similar timeline of “waste/surplus”.
We are hoping that each student would collect 10 citations (5 from the internet and
5 from the library/non-digital sources)
Conceptual routes:
We live in a time of extreme disparity between those living in scarcity and those that
create scarcity. The current global economy produces an abundance of food and consumer
goods that create waste and by-products that are either unusable or in some cases illegal
to use (food surplus). How has waste been dealt with throughout history? How far can we
cast our conceptual web to think about creating a timeline of surplus/waste?
Possible arc’s the timeline could traject upon:
Surplus creates scavengers, history of scavenging, history of satellite probes
that never made it to space, recycling, creative reuse, scrapping, collectors,
urine harvested for nitrogen turned into fertilizer…

Wanted:
Research citations:
100 words or more text (and or images)
-source of citation:
–print out of book (book cover)
–author
–page number
–website/url
Deadline:
March 23, 2009
Contemporary Museum
high noon.
We will lay out all the citations, discuss and create a timeline with the materials
in the museum.
Carbon Footprint postcard project
GOforChange invites you to participate in a fun new project.
What is the best thing are you doing to lower your carbon footprint or have a lighter impact on the planet? — OR — What would you do if you could do anything?
Drop us a postcard that illustrates your answer. Include a brief note (if you wish) on the reverse, and mail your postcard to:
